SONG OF THE DAY / Tony Joe White - Closer to the Truth

Closer to the Truth from the second album "Closer to the Truth" (1991) by American singer-songwriter Tony Joe White. The album marked White's return to recording, after years working solely as a songwriter.

Closer to the Truth:  https://youtu.be/lycWErC0sv4 :

Lyrics:

Strong instinct for survival

Romantically insane

Moving soft along the edge of time

Like a panther in the rain

Manipulated rebels

With a total disregard for the rules

When pride comes tumbling off the great white stallion

You move closer to the truth

And the search continues for the meaning

They build the cathedrals high

But we keep our weapons ready

Looming dark against the sky

They're taking down the rain forest

Changing it to a room without a view

And the big trees fall like dominoes

And we move closer

The eagle watches from the mountain

As the warriors turn into fools

And the dice are thrown on sacred ground

And they move closer to the truth

And who's gonna tell the children

How the rivers used to flow cystal blue

And we keep leaving scars on Mother Earth

And moving closer to the truth

Cathedral (Symphonic / prog. rock, USA)

Biography:

Founded in Long Island, USA in 1975 - Disbanded in 1978 - Regrouped 2003-2007

The roots of CATHEDRAL lie in a psychedelic band called Odyssey. When that band broke up in 1975, bassist Fred Callan, and mellotronist Tom Doncourt ventured on to form CATHEDRAL. The band was filled out by drummer Mercury Caronia IV, guitarist Rudy Perrone, and vocalist Paul Seal. They toured the Long Island club scene, and bravely decided to play original music. Instead of Psychedelic, they were taking more cues from the prog leaders of the time, the likes of King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, and Gentle Giant. What Tom Doncourt refers to as a "majestic" sound.

In 1978 they got together with Delta Records, and recorded "Stained Glass Stories." 10,000 copies were printed and sold. Interestingly, Delta Records was not much more than a studio above the Palace Theater in Times Square. However, Delta did have connections to record chains, and had the likes of Duke Ellington and Allison Steele recording right alongside. It was very much like the independent labels of today. New York City itself was fertile territory for progressive rock at the time. Tom Doncourt tells stories of turning old movie theaters into concert halls for one night stands. They built the stages, put in lighting, and wired the spaces for sound themselves.

All of this led to interest from Atlantic Records. They had some meetings, but this was the end of the '70s. The popularity of prog was rapidly declining. So a second album was not to be (or was it?). This did not diminish the importance of "Stained Glass Stories." It became a highly valued collectible, and the subject of much critical acclaim. Some have even called it the best American prog album ever. Renewed interest in prog led Syn-Phonic to re-release the album on CD in 1990.

As prog began to rise again, so did interest in CATHEDRAL. Finally, in 2003, Fred Callan called on his band mates once again. They brought old and new equipment, and had a mission to create progressive music that was true to its history, but not limited by it. The played together, and experimented for three years. Then they entered the studio. The process proved to be too much for Rudy Perrone, and he left the group. The thought of adding a new guitarist to the mix was a source of great anxiety. The guys were blessed to find David Doig. His sensibilities proved to gel right with the vision of the band. After almost 30 years, they released their second album. 2007's "The Bridge" is the follow up, and also a new beginning. In Early 2008, the band signed with Musea, and continues to work on new material. It took a while, but the future now looks bright for CATHEDRAL.

=======================================================

In 2003, Fred called us all up to say he was putting the band back together! 25 years had passed since the release of "Stained Glass Stories". In one way or another reuniting was on all our minds...it was time. The internet, the technologies, the release of progressive music from current and past sources indicated it. We met in Fred's rehearsal space, bringing with us an assortment of new and old equipment. We faced the task of coming up with music that was true to the original values of Progressive Rock, grounded in history but not limited by it. In nearly four years we wrote hours of music. New ideas grew out of old ideas. A year ago we entered the recording studio. In the tremendously challenging process that followed, we lost our guitarist, Rudy Perrone. The addition of a new member would inevitably alter a 31 year chemistry of the band. Miraculously, with David Doig's perspectives, influences, and enormous musical knowledge in place, our continuity remained unbroken. CATHEDRAL, a band named after architecture designed to inspire awe and epiphany, LIVES!

ALBUM OF THE WEEK / Illúvatar - Children (1995)

Album of the week / Illúvatar - Children (1995)

Iluvatar biography:

Band from Baltimore, which plays a symphonic Neo Prog music with total influence of Peter GABRIEL's era GENESIS, MARILLION and PINK FLOYD. The musicianship is very good, but the vocals are real GABRIEL clone like.

"Children" is perhaps a bit more to my taste as it employs more of a 70's feel, particularly with the keyboard sounds. "A Story Two Days Wide", their most adventurous work to date, is one of their best album, on a level playing field with noted bands such as IQ, PENDRAGON, and ARENA.

Members:

Gary Chambers (drums, percussion, backing vocals)

Glen McLaughlin (lead vocals, percussion)

Dean Morekas (bass, backing vocals)

Dennis Mullin (guitars) and Jim Rezek (keyboards)

Studio Album, released in 1995.

Track Listing:

1. Haze - 00:00

2. In Our Lives - 06:43

3. Given Away - 13:30

4. Late Of Conscience - 20:13

5. Cracker - 29:11

6. Eye Next To Glass - 35:11

7. Your Darkest Hour - 40:07

Phylter (Symphonic/prog rock, Belgium)

Phylter was a band from the northern part of Belgium, who’s selftitled debut album was recorded in a small studio in Brugge and released in 1978. It was a concept album that told the story about sailors who’s vessel hided in a deep-sea cave for the storm.

The entrance (can be seen on the beautiful cover artwork) soon closed down by blocks so they had to go down and climb from cavern to cavern, until finally they stepped in a new world who was hidden under the sea. This story did correspond quite good with the monumental symphonic rock (Camel, Yes, Pink Floyd) Phylter was playing.

The album is mainly instrumental and the vocals in very good English are simply delightful but their highest point is Patrick Phillippe, an incredible keyboardist from who there's also rare info. The album has all the ingredients that would make it desirable for any Prog collection, strong and dramatic changes and beautiful melodies, specially in the closer, the excellent 15 minutes epic "Down and Mood for Change".

For their first and only self titled release in1978 and upgraded to CD the year 1993 by the French Spalax label they counted with Jean-Marie Aerts playing rhythm Guitar ad guest.

Members:

Patrick Philips (organ, Fender Rhodes, piano, strings, synthesizer, vocals)

Marc Van Bortel (guitar, vocals)

Paul Van Bortel (bass, vocals)

Christian Zaman (drums)

Jean Marie Aearts playing rhythm guitar (guest)

Rens Van der Zalm  (violin)

Album: "Phylter" 1978 / Genre: Symphonic Progressive Rock

1. Overture (0:00)

2. Dreams Of Yesterdays (6:36)

3. Phylter (11:53)

4. Promenade (16:11)

5. Consideration (22:12)

6. Down And Mood For Change (28:07)

Susan Christie (psych. folk / USA)

Susan Christie is an American singer-songwriter from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She had a minor hit with the novelty song "I Love Onions" (written by Donald Cochrane and John Hill). The track, which peaked at #63 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1966, is described as having a sound reminiscent of the 1920s, with Christie's "breathy" vocal backed by a chorus of kazoo players and male backup singers.

In Canada, however, the single fared much better, reaching #19 on the RPM 100 national singles chart on August 1, 1966. The tune was later adapted for a Canadian television commercial as "I Love Turtles" in 1980.

Signed to Columbia Records, Christie recorded an album in 1970, Paint a Lady. Described as "psychedelic folk music". After one novelty song, the label bosses didn’t think her melancholy take on country and solitude would ever be of any interest. The album went unreleased by Columbia, which considered it to be non-commercial, and Christie was dropped from the label. The album, of which only three vinyl copies were ever pressed, languished in obscurity until 2006, when Manchester-based DJ Andy Votel received a copy and brought the album renewed attention and a CD release. SPIN magazine described the album as "funky free folk" filled with "brilliantly original songs" and Christie as a "dark, strange songbird". Susan

Christie’s album is a beautiful piece of despondent tales and folky psychedelia. The fascinating thing is that it sounds very current. The title track is reminiscent of Portishead , while other songs incorporate break heavy folk-funk, current DJ’s would die for.

Christie participated in the 2008 "Lost Ladies of Folk" project spearheaded by Votel and his spouse, recording artist Jane Weaver, performing in concert at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and appearing on the compilation album Bearded Ladies. In 2010 Christie appeared as a guest artist on Weaver's album The Fallen By Watch Bird.
