Judee Sill (documentary, BBC Radio 2014)

The Lost Genius of Judee Sill  (Documentary: BBC Radio 2014)

Ruth Barnes delves into the extraordinary story of the musician Judee Sill.

The first act signed to David Geffen's Asylum Records in the early 1970s, Judee Sill produced two astonishingly beautiful albums in her lifetime.

Seemingly emerging from the Laurel Canyon scene, her music wove a diverse tapestry of influences - from gospel piano to Bach, rhythm and blues to country, forty-part vocal harmonies blending into piano ballads...

So why did Judee Sill disappear from view? Ruth Barnes traces Judee's peculiar life story - hearing tales of armed robberies, reform school and addiction, alongside musical invention and heartstopping songs.

With contributions from family, friends, lovers and devotees of her music including JD Souther, XTC's Andy Partridge, Jim Pons, Tommy Peltier and 'Whispering' Bob Harris.

Producer: Eleanor McDowall

Janis Joplin's Hotel Room in The Landmark Hotel (three small films)

Old footage of the hotel and room Janis stayed in when she died. It was called The Landmark Hotel, but has since changed to The Highland Gardens.

https://youtu.be/aZEtv0cVFBI

At this Hotel on October 4, 1970 the great Rock & Roll chanteuse Janis Joplin was found dead in room #105 of an apparent heroin overdose which was too Pure. She stayed at this place thru the summer and early fall while recording what would sadly be her last studio album- Pearl. This hotel was a convenient stay what with it being just two blocks away from Sunset Sound Recording Studios where she was recording on.

Classmate remembers Janis Joplin on what would have been her 70th birthday week (documentary)

PORT ARTHUR- By: Leslie Rangel

Port Arthur's iconic Janis Joplin would be celebrating her 70th birthday this week (19 januari 2013)  if she were still alive. A former classmate of Joplin spoke with KFDM News about her younger years and her life in the spotlight.

None of us ever knew who would be successful and who would not be, but Janice had an ability to sing. We knew that because she would sing folk music, Sam Monroe, president of Port Arthur State College said.
Monroe tells KFDM news they never really knew who would be successful from their class, but like many artists, Joplin started small.

I heard her sing at what we used to call a hootenanny, Monroe says.
Monroe and Joplin were classmates and friends from kindergarten through high school. Monroe says Joplin was a star student, editor of the school newspaper, a writer and an artist. He says Jopin's love for music changed her.
We don't think of folk music as being counter culture today, but in that day and time, it was sort of a protest style of music, Monroe remembers.

Joplin was often seen wearing what others called rebellious fashion. Her home in Port Arthur on 32nd St. still stands and now has a historical marker in the front yard. Monroe says she would have loved it.
She would write or call her mother and say 'There was a feature on me today in the Washington Post, Do you think the Port Arthur News would carry it?' She wanted to be recognized in Port Arthur and she has been since 1988, Monroe says.

Janis Joplin died more than 40 years ago, but Monroe says he will always remember his friend and school mate.
The Museum of the Gulf Coast has a permanent Janis Joplin exhibit on display, Sunday, museum curators will open a new exhibit featuring more Joplin memories as part of the International Pop Music Festival.

Aisles (prog. rock / Chile)

Biography:
Aisles is a six-piece prog rock band originally from Santiago, Chile. The group was formed in 2001 by brothers Germán (guitar) and Luis Vergara (keyboards), and childhood friend Rodrigo Sepúlveda (guitar). Later on, it expanded to include lead singer Sebastián Vergara and Alejandro Meléndez (keyboards). Drummer Felipe Candia and bassist Daniel Baird-Kerr joined the band in 2007 and 2011 respectively.

Genres: progressive rock, art rock, fusion world music

Years active: 2001 - present

The band has often been praised by its eclectic style, combining elements of rock, progressive rock, fusion, and Latin music, among others. It has toured South America, North America and Europe, and has participated in prestigious prog-rock festivals. Its albums have been published in Europe, the United States, and Japan, and in 2009 was nominated for Best Foreign Record in the Prog Awards for their second album, In Sudden Walks.

Over the course of its career, Aisles has experimented with elements from a variety of genres and styles, including progressive rock, neo-prog, symphonic rock, art rock, classical and Latin music. The band has often been praised by its eclecticism, lyrical content and musical execution. Aisles influences include King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Rush, Queen, Genesis, Yes, Marillion, Porcupine Tree, and Dream Theater.

After playing gigs at local clubs and bars, the band entered the studio in 2003 with the aim of recording its first demo for promotional purposes, but having achieved such a high quality of sound and interpretation decided to release that effort as their first full-length album. The Yearning (2005) was mixed and mastered over a span of ten weeks, and was subsequently released and distributed in South America, Europe, the United States, and Japan receiving generally positive reviews by specialized press. Françoise Couture of Allmusic wrote "The Yearning, Chilean band Aisles' first calling card, is a convincing disc of South American-flavored neo-progressive rock. Nothing gets reinvented. But the lads clearly know what they are doing", while Conor Fines of Prog Sphere stated "based on its own merits, Aisles’ The Yearning is a very good debut. Melody, strong songwriting, admirable performances, and enough details in the music to be worth going back to quite a few times makes the album an unlikely winner.
