Janis Joplin's 70th Birthday (born January 19, 1943)

Janis Joplin
LEGACY RECORDINGS COMMEMORATES JANIS JOPLIN'S 70TH BIRTHDAY HONORING ICONIC SINGER AS LABEL'S FIRST ARTIST OF THE MONTH IN JANUARY 2013 - The Pearl Sessions Nominated For 2013 Best Album Notes Grammy Award

Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, commemorates the life and music of Janis Joplin on the occasion of the singer's 70th birthday and celebrates the iconic electric blues singer as the label's first Artist of the Month in January 2013.

(Legacy's Artist of the Month will provide fresh perspectives on musical legends whose sounds continue to effect people's lives.  Each month, the series will offer new fans and deep aficionados alike the opportunity to focus on an essential cornerstone catalog of pop music history).

Columbia/Legacy Recordings marked 2012 with the release of two essential new titles in the catalog of the quintessential blues-rock-country-soul singer: Janis Joplin - The Pearl Sessions, a two-disc set premiering newly discovered studio recordings produced by Paul Rothchild, was released in April, preceded by Big Brother and the Holding Company Featuring Janis Joplin - Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968, an electrifying full-length concert recorded and produced for release by the legendary soundman Owsley ("Bear") Stanley.

An historic expansion of Joplin's final studio album, The Pearl Sessions provides fascinating new insight into Janis' creative process through a range of rare and previously unreleased material.

The Pearl Sessions includes a new essay penned by Holly George-Warren, currently in the running for this year's Best Album Notes Grammy Award. In her notes, George-Warren zeroes in on "A Woman Left Lonely," one of the last songs recorded by Joplin, observing, "For Janis, though, the song’s sentiments seemed a fact of life. For us, an ultimate sacrifice that resulted in some of the best music of the 20th century: 'They asked me, "How did you learn to sing the blues like that?"' Janis said, a mere three months before her death. 'I just opened my mouth and that’s what I sounded like … you can’t make up something that you don’t feel. You give up every constant in the world except music. That’s the only thing in the world you got.'"

Born January 19, 1943, in Port Arthur, Texas, Janis Joplin possessed one of the most distinctive, influential and unconventionally beautiful voices in pop history.  Pure honey sweet and soul-ravaged raw, her voice was full of power and longing and heartbreak and triumph.  She sang a mixture of blues, soul, gospel, jazz, country and rock that transcended genres and connected to the core of the cosmos.  Earthy yet not-of-this-world,Janis Joplin embodied the primordial "rock mama" paradigm and the blues have never sounded the same.

A self-described "misfit" in high school, she fell under the sway of Lead Belly, Bessie Smith and Big Mama Thornton in her teens, dabbling in folk music and painting.  In 1963, she headed to San Francisco, where she met guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, her first link to the Haight-Ashbury underground music scene. By 1966, Janis had joined, and was ostensibly fronting, the psychedelic-rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company.  She was developing an extravagant persona, both on-stage and off, her passionate performances matched by an iconic sartorial splendor that's become visually synonymous with the era. Janis and Big Brother's increasingly high-profile shows earned them a devoted fan base and serious industry attention;they signed with Columbia Records and released their major-label debut in 1967.Joplin's seismic presence, as evidenced by her shattering performance at the Monterey Pop Festival, was captured for posterity by filmmaker D.A.Pennebaker.

Big Brother's "Piece of My Heart," on 1968's Cheap Thrills LP, shot to #12 on the Billboard Hot 100, the album sold a million copies in a month, and Joplin became a sensation – earning rapturous praise from Time and Vogue, appearing on The Dick Cavett Show and capturing the imagination of audiences that had never experienced such fiery intensity in a female rock singer.  Her emergence as a solo star was inevitable; she put together her own outfit, the Kozmic Blues Band, and in 1969 released I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama! which went gold. That year also saw her perform at the Woodstock festival.

Joplin assembled a new backup group, the Full Tilt Boogie Band, in 1970; she also joined a bill with the Grateful Dead, the Band and other artists for the "Festival Express" railroad tour through Canada.  Her final studio album, the landmark Pearl, introduced signature material including Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee" and her own acappella plaint, "Mercedes Benz," while showcasing her mastery of virtually all pop genres.  The latter song was, along with a phone-message birthday greeting for John Lennon, the last thing she recorded; she died in October of 1970, and Pearl was released posthumously the following year.  The quadruple-platinum set became the top-selling release of Joplin's career and,in 2003, was ranked #122 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time."

Janis Joplin's recordings and filmed performances have secured her status as an enduring cultural icon, inspiring countless imitators and musical devotees.  Myriad hit collections,live anthologies and other repackaged releases have kept her legend alive, as have one-woman shows such as the hit Love,Janis (which Joplin's sister, Laura, helped create) and 2009's Edinburgh Festival Fringe "Best Solo Performance" nominee Janis. A documentary produced by Alex Gibney, Susan Lacy and Jeff Jampol, directed by Amy Berg ("West Of Memphis") is now in production. One Night With Janis Joplin, a critically acclaimed musical currently touring, has played to sold-out houses in Portland,Cleveland and Washington, DC, and has received nine Broadway World and two Cleveland Critic Circle Awards nominations.

In 1988, the Janis Joplin Memorial, featuring a bronze sculpture by artist Douglas Clark, was unveiled in Port Arthur.

Joplin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and posthumously given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.

Janis Joplin will be given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2013.

Lamp of the Universe (cosmic hippy acid folk/psychedelic/space rock / New Zealand)

Formed in 1999, Lamp of the Universe is a cosmic hippy acid folk/psychedelic/space rock one-man project of Craig Williamson, from New Zealand.

About the album "The Cosmic Union (2001):

It’s one of the very rare current bands which succeed to really sound 70’s-like. Most of the time, it’s pure psychedelic folk, and at times the guitar evokes Conny Veit’s sound from Popol Vuh on this first album. Like on the “Earth, spirit & sky” latter album, there’s one piece which clearly emerges from the whole (“Freedom in Your Mind”). Leaded by a fabulous psychedelic guitar, this slightly heavy piece is very hendrixian in nature and makes the whole album worth. Without knowing, impossible to tell that this piece is from a current band. Impressive!

The Fool (design collective and band) (Art, psych. folk / The Netherlands)

Simon Posthuma and Marijke Koger - 1968
The Fool were a Dutch design collective and band who were influential in the psychedelic style of art in British popular music in the late 1960s. The colourful art draws on many fantastical and mystical themes. The group was named in reference to The Fool tarot card.

The original members were Dutch artists Simon (Seemon) Posthuma and Marijke Koger, who were discovered by photographer Karl Ferris among the hippie community on the Spanish island of Ibiza in 1966. He took photographs of clothes designed by them, and sent them to London where they were published in The Times (London) and immediately caused a sensation. Ferris took The Fool back to London, and together they opened a studio, with the Dutch artists producing clothes and art, and Ferris pursuing photography. Barry Finch and artist Josje Leeger joined later. All had been involved with Beatles manager Brian Epstein's Saville Theatre and with the design of the facade and much of the merchandise of The Beatles' Apple Boutique store.

Works:

Their work includes:

- The colourful clothes worn by The Hollies on the cover of their 1967 album Evolution;

- Stage costumes and the front cover design for the self-titled 1967 debut LP Move by The Move;

- Stage costumes for Procol Harum;

- The cover of the Incredible String Band's 1967 LP The 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion;

- Stage costumes and decoration to instruments used by Cream, including Eric Clapton's famed Gibson SG guitar named also The Fool, Jack Bruce's Fender Bass VI bass, and Ginger Baker's drum kit, created for the group's 1967 tour of the US.

- The inner sleeve for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

- The Fool's best known artworks are those they created for The Beatles in 1966–67. They include:
* the original (rejected) cover and the inner sleeve for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band;
* the clothes worn in the 1967 television broadcast of "All You Need Is Love";
* the huge 3-story mural painted in psychedelic colours on the facade of the Beatles' Apple Boutique in London's Baker Street (which also stocked their creations; months later, the mural was painted over by civic order, due to protests from other local businesses, before the shop failed);
* decoration to John Lennon's piano and one of his Gibson acoustic guitars
* decoration to George Harrison's Mini car and his bungalow Kinfauns in Surrey (including a lavish fireplace mural), as well as several of Harrison's guitars;
* the set design for Joe Massot's 1968 movie Wonderwall, with a score by George Harrison (The Fool also appeared in the film's party scene).

(It would appear that, contrary to popular belief, The Fool did not create the psychedelic paintwork on John Lennon's Rolls-Royce. Cynthia Lennon's memoir claims that the work was carried out by "a firm of barge and caravan designers". An article about the car on the Ottawa Beatles site  states that the work was carried out by J.P. Fallon Limited, a coachworks company located in Chertsey, Surrey. The site has a newspaper article confirming this. J.P. Fallon commissioned Steve Weaver's pattern of scroll and flowers (who came up with design) for the Phantom V. The idea to make the car psychedelic was based on a suggestion from Marijke Koger, a member of the Fool who told Lennon to "paint the Rolls like the gypsy wagon" that was in his garden. There is photograph of the template (or artwork board) that Steve Weaver used to create the design for the car at the Ottawa Beatles Site.)

After moving to Los Angeles the Fool created the largest mural in the world at the time (1969) on the walls of the Aquarius Theatre for the opening of the play HAIR by invitation of the producer Michael Butler. Simon & Marijke continued to paint other theaters where HAIR was playing in San Francisco, Seattle and Chicago. Henceforth the Fool split up, Simon, Barry and Yosha eventually went back to Amsterdam while Marijke remained in Los Angeles to continue her artistic endeavors.

The Beatles opened their Apple Boutique on December 7, 1967, a time when psychedelia was sweeping through Swinging London:

In early 1967, Eric Clapton commissioned “The Fool” to paint it.

Musical career:

The Fool also released an eponymous album in 1968, in the Psych-Folk style, produced by Graham Nash of The Hollies. It was re-released in 2005. This album was mentioned in the last chapter of Gravity's Rainbow, where it is suggested that one of the novel's characters went on to play with the band.
As Seemon & Marijke they released another album called Son of America on A & M records, also produced by Graham Nash, in collaboration with Booker T. Jones, in 1969.
Seemon & Marijke recorded a third album called Mediterranean Blues produced by Booker T. Jones in his Homegrown Studio in 1972. Their second single I saw you was a hit in the Netherlands.
In August 2012, Simon's son Douwe Bob won a Dutch TV talent show, The Best Singer-Songwriter of the Netherlands. His debut single Multicoloured Angels, dedicated to his father, entered the Dutch charts in October 2012.

Q65 (psych. rock, garage rock, rhythm and blues / The Netherlands)

Q65 were a Dutch Garage rock/Psychedelic rock/Rhythm and blues group formed in 1965 and categorised in the Netherlands as being part of the Nederbeat genre.

Years active 1965–1968, 1970–2000

Biography:

1965: Formation:
Q65 was formed in early 1965 when guitarists Joop Roelofs and Frank Nuyens decide to start a band with singer Willem Bieler. The line-up was completed by bass player Peter Vink and drummer Jay Baar. The band was inspired by rhythm and blues traditionals and the songs of Robert Johnson and Willie Dixon as well as The Kinks, The Animals and The Rolling Stones. Q65 started their performances in the Spring of 1965. During a concert at skating ring De Eenhoorn, they met producer Peter Koelewijn. Very impressed by their show, he invited them to an audition at the Phonogram studio, where they recorded two of their own songs; "And Your Kind" and "You're The Victor". Koelewijn decided to release them on vinyl.

1966-1968: The Golden Years:
In January 1966, their debut single "You're The Victor" was released and later peaked at #11 on the Dutch Top 40. Then Hans van Hemert replaced Koelewijn. Two other singles reached the Dutch charts the same year; "The Life I Live" (#5) and "I Despise You" (#19). Under Van Hemert's guidance their first album entitled Revolution was recorded and released by Decca Records. In 1967, they hit the charts again with the singles "From Above" (#13) and "World of birds" (#8). Due to drug problems and military service duties of singer Wim Bieler, Q65 disbanded in 1968.

Comeback:
Q65 reformed in 1970, with Beer Klaasse on drums, and signed to Negram Records, staying together for one year and two LPs, Afghanistan and We Are Gonna Make It, which had a slightly more psychedelic orientation. Q65's line-up changed during the early 1970s as Nuyens exited to join Baar in a band called Rainman, while Q65 continued with a new line-up, featuring John Frederikz on vocals and Joop van Nimwegen on guitar. The original Q65 reunited in 1980 and toured that year. The group continued in various configurations throughout the middle of the 1980s. Jay Baar died in 1990, but a version of the band, with Wim Bieler as leader, continued playing into the 1990s.

C.O.B. (Folk / England)

C.O.B (Clive's Own Band)

After leaving The Incredible String Band because they probably were too far-out for him, Clive Palmer moved to Penzance and cut two records with his "own band", which are now very sought-after. Even though Palmer is essentially a very limited vocalist and writer, and despite the extremely sparse and austere arrangements of his "folk" songs, manage to convey a surprisingly gripping atmosphere of sadness and resignation. His vocals waver, his compositions tend to be repetitive, still the result is nothing less than perplexing. Some of the tracks transmit a religious feeling, not in the usual sense of the word, but on a purely emotional level. Pretty convincing and recommended. Palmer then went on to participate in the Temple Creatures and Famous Jug Band.

Music of the ages (from the album "Spirit of Love, 1971)

Ultimate Spinach ( psych. rock, hard rock, blues / USA)

Ultimate Spinach was a psychedelic/hard rock/blues band, formed 1967, originally from Boston (USA). In their '60's heyday they specialized in lengthy songs such as "Ballad of the Hip Death Goddess", from Ultimate Spinach (1968) and "Genesis of Beauty", from Behold And See (1968). Since 1970 the band have largely abandoned the psychedelic sounds and have (since at least 1975) dropped all of the '60's songs from their setlists (with the exception of 'Ballad Of The Hip Death Goddess' and a few from the third album).

Description:

The Ultimate Spinach, composed of keyboardist/guitarist Ian Bruce-Douglas and singer Barbara Hudson was a band of Boston's alternative scene in the second half of the 1960s. The phenomenon of the "Bosstown Sound", (whose other top acts included The Beacon Street Union, also on MGM), was more a publicity stunt than a legitimate artistic movement.

Mindflowers:

(Ballad of)The Hip Death Goddess:

On the first two of their three albums, Ultimate Spinach was utterly dominated by leader Ian Bruce-Douglas, who wrote all of the material, sang the majority of the lead vocals, and played a wide variety of instruments, most frequently electric keyboards.

First album: Ultimate Spinach - Ultimate Spinach (1968)

On Ultimate Spinach (MGM, 1968) the standout cuts are "Ballad of the Hip Death Goddess", with an instrumental interval for theremin (an early electronic instrument) and feedback and reverberation; the psychoanalytic folk-blues "Ego Trip"; the 4-part suite "Sacrifice of the Moon"; "Your Head Is Reeling"; and "Plastic Raincoats", somewhat in the style of Frank Zappa or the Velvet Underground.
Their self-titled debut, released in 1967, was a seriously intended psychedelic stew, with inadvertent comically awkward results. Bruce-Douglas' songs tended to be either dippily, humorlessly cosmic, or colored by equally too-serious fingerpointing at mainstream society. The music aped the songwriting forms and guitar/keyboard textures of West Coast psychedelic stars the Doors, the Jefferson Airplane, and Country Joe & the Fish, but sounded like ham-handed pastiches. Bruce-Douglas created some sleek, weedy electric keyboard lines on tracks like "Sacrifice of the Moon," but was sometimes so imitative of Country Joe & the Fish's first album that he crossed the line into plagiarism, as on "Baroque #1," with its close similarities to Country Joe's "The Masked Marauder." There were more graceful touches in the occasional vocals by guitarist Barbara Hudson and a Baroque-classical tinge to some of the arrangements, and the album did actually sell fairly well.

Tracks:

1. Ego Trip
2. Sacrifice Of The Moon
3. Plastic Raincoats/Hung Up Minds
4. (Ballad Of) The Hip Death Goddess
5. Your Head Is Reeling
6. Dove In Hawk's Clothing
7. Baroque #1
8. Funny Freak Parade
9. Pamela

Second album: Ultimate Spinach - Behold & see (1968):

More complex compositions, such as the suite in four movements "Genesis of Beauty" and "Fragmentary March of Green", two pieces soaked in mysticism, are included in the second album Behold And See (MGM, 1968). "Jazz Thing" and "Mind Flowers" experimented with even more unusual tempos and atmosphere, while "Gilded Lamp Of The Cosmos" exemplifies their psychedelic folk ballads. (A later re-release on the Big Beat label omits "Visions of your Reality" and makes liberal edits to other cuts.)
Behold and See, also released in 1968, was similar to the debut album but a little more even-keeled. That wasn't all good news: there weren't any keyboard-dominated instrumentals to rival "Sacrifice of the Moon," Barbara Hudson didn't have any lead vocals (although guest vocalist Carol Lee Britt took some), and Bruce-Douglas' songwriting was still embarrassingly high-minded and pretentious. The mysterious Bruce-Douglas disbanded Ultimate Spinach after the second LP was recorded, leaving Lorber holding the bag, as a third Ultimate Spinach album had already been scheduled for release.

Tracks:

1. Gilded Lamp of the Cosmos
2. Visions of Your Reality
3. Jazz Thing
4. Mind Flowers
5. Where You're At
6. Suite: Genesis of Beauty (In Four Parts)
7. Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse
8. Fragmentary March of Green

Third album: Ultimate Spinach III (1969)

Upon release of the second album, Ian Bruce-Douglas quit Ultimate Spinach and a new band was formed with only Barbara Hudson as an original member. Tony Scheuren, Ted Myers, Mike Levine and Jeff Baxter were added and a third album was recorded. One of the musicians who played on the album was guitarist Jeff Baxter, member of Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers. This album leaves behind the psychedelic effects that characterized the Bruce-Douglas period and displayed a generic sound more reminiscent of such acts as The Byrds, The Monkees and the '68-era Beach Boys.
The record was an undistinguished jumble of psychedelic, hard rock, and pop styles that sounded like the work of several different bands.

Reformation:

In 1970 the band reformed with no original members and have continued to this day, performing (generally in the Oregon area) and releasing several independent albums. This band has always remained underground and in recent years Bruce-Douglas has derided its existence.

Years later Bruce-Douglas created Azlbrax, with whom he released In The Valley Of The Shadow (Intergalactic, 1988).

SONG OF THE DAY / Elephants Memory - Super Heep (1969)

Elephants Memory - Super Heep (US 1969) : https://youtu.be/5rL7J15G--E :

From the back of the vinyl cover:

"The Elephants Memory is living proof of the adage, "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts." The Elephants Memory is made up of many parts. Seven people representing two generations, jazz and rock; two ideologies, that of the rebel and that of the love world. Their music is hard yet soft, happy yet pensive, complex and simple, powerful and delicate, tribal and modern. The group is brassy New York with the radiance of California sun.
Out of all these disparate elements, a unique and honestly individual sound emerges, strong and pure, truly moving. This is the Elephants Memory!

The Doors - When You're Strange (Film, Documentary, 2009)

When You're Strange is a 2009 documentary about the life of The Doors. It is written and directed by Tom DiCillo and for the first time makes material from Jim Morrison's 1969 film fragment HWY: An American Pastoral publicly available.
Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek has stated that "This will be the true story of the Doors," and that the film will be "the anti-Oliver Stone," referring to the 1991 film about the group that Stone directed, and which drew quite a bit of criticism from many Doors fans and Morrison intimates for certain departures from the truth in Stone's screenplay.

The documentary first screened at the Sundance Film Festival on January 17, 2009. It received somewhat favorable reviews from that showing, however the narration (by director DiCillo) was singled out by most viewers as very seriously flawed for its monotonic delivery. Due to the rash of complaints about the narration, Johnny Depp was hired to redub it. A few months later, DiCillo pronounced the film "just about locked", and announced that there would be a showing of the new "redux" version.

 It debuted at the Los Angeles Film Festival on Sunday, June 21, 2009. The completed film was also shown at the London Film Festival on October 16-18, 2009. The film was released in theaters on April 9, 2010, with a soundtrack release on April 6, 2010. It was released in Canada on April 15, 2010. PBS showed this film as part of its series American Masters on May 12, 2010.
The film was released on DVD on June 29, 2010. In France the film, distributed by MK2, was released under its original title and received an excellent reception.

Robby Krieger believes that the film puts together a more accurate portrayal of Morrison than the 1991 biopic stating; ‘I think when you see the Oliver Stone movie – I'm amazed how good Val Kilmer did – but, you know, the problem with that movie is that the script was kind of stupid. It doesn't really capture how Jim was at all. This gives you a much better insight into how his mind worked, I think.'
Overall Krieger felt ‘really happy’ about how the film has turned out, crediting in particular the editing work. The surviving members of the band decided not to get too involved in the project to try to get the right neutral balance that an outsider would try to achieve."

The film has been nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Nonfiction Series following its airing on American Masters on PBS.  In December of 2010 the film was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Long Form Video and subsequently won the award in February 2011.
