Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno - also known as Brian Eno defies categorisation. Musician, composer, record producer, music theorist, singer and visual artist covers some of what he does, but he's probably best known for his early work with Roxy Music, his production duties for U2 and Coldplay and as one of the principal innovators of ambient music. But however he's pigeon-holed, this remarkable, creative visionary remains amongst the most influential individuals to have ever worked within the music industry. This documentary film - the first ever about Eno - explores his life, career and music between the years 1971 and 1977, the period that some view as his golden age, others as just one era in a long, extraordinary and very eclectic career. Featuring numerous exclusive interviews, contributions from a range of musicians, writers [including his official biographer], colleagues, collaborators and friends - plus archive footage, performance and studio film and an abundance of arguably the most exceptional music ever created. Biography: Birth Control was a German rock band known for their progressive hard rock sound and provocative album covers. Amongst the longest running bands of German rock, Birth Control were formed way back in 1966/1968 in Berlin from two other bands, the Earls and the Gents. They chose their rather controversial name as a stab at Pope Paul's anti birth control policy. Birth Control were, from the start of their career, tipped to be one of Germany's top rock acts. They were originally formed by Bernd Koschmidder (bass), Reinhold Sobotta (organ), Rolf Gurra (sax, vocals) and Egon Balder (drums). Egon left in 1969, and Bruno Frenzel (guitars, vocals) and Bernd Noske (drums, vocals) joined. With a lot of talk by Pope Paul about abolishing the pill and other forms of contraception, they thought that the name Birth Control would be an appropriate way of protesting against his ideas, and this move led them to be classed as an underground group. They did several club tours and Metronome records signed them up. Genre: psychedelic krautrock to heavy progressive rock with elements of blues and jazz. Years active: 1966–1983, 1993–2016

Lyrics: Zoo time is she and you time The mammals are your favourite type, and you want her tonight Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat You hear the thunder of stampeding rhinos, elephants and tacky tigers This town ain't big enough for both of us And it ain't me who's gonna leave Flying domestic flying And when the stewardess is near do not show any fear Heartbeat increasing heartbeat You are a khaki-coloured bombadier it's Hiroshima that you're nearing This town ain't big enough for both of us And it ain't me who's gonna leave Daily, except for Sunday You dawdle in to the cafe where you meet her each day Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat As twenty cannibals have hold of you, they need their protein just like you do This town ain't big enough for both of us And it ain't me who's gonna leave Shower, another shower You've got to look your best for her and be clean everywhere Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat The rain is pouring on the foreign town, the bullets cannot cut you down This town ain't big enough for both of us And it ain't me who's gonna leave Census, the latest census There'll be more girls who live in town though not enough to go round Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat You know that: This town isn't big enough, not big enough for both of us This town isn't big enough, not big enough for both of us
Biography: Riff Raff was a British progressive rock band formed by keyboardist Tommy Eyre in 1972. The band was a continuation on the back of drummers (and Harrow School of Art friends) Rod Coombes and Joe Czarnecki's (aka Joe Peter)'s project originally called 'Crikey' which started in 1969 and completed in 1970, when Coombes had to accept growing tour commitments with Juicy Lucy. These sessions comprised half of the Riff Raff album Outside Looking In, in which Coombes wrote half the songs. Riff Raff later went on to release two albums to lukewarm response; however, their use of jazz and hard-edged rock garnered them a large underground following. Riff Raff also released the single "Copper Kettle". Riff Raff was practically Eyre’s own band and in part was a continuation of previous projects. By mid-1974 they had released a handful albums, culminating in Original Man. A gentler, more temperate offering and not overly successful at the time, Riff Raff’s music has lasted well. Despite being somewhat unconventional, it portrays high calibre, soothing blues-tinged progressive rock with occasional splashings of jazz. Eyre showcased his talents on “Goddam The Man”, where a Wurlitzer, Fender Rhodes, Grand Piano and Hammond can all be heard playing in one solo on the song! Riff Raff guitarist Peter Kirtley recalled his first meetings with Eyre. “I first met up with Tommy Eyre and Rodger Sutton on the gig and session scene around London. They were looking for a guitarist/songwriter and Tommy put me through my paces at his house in Grove Park, South East London. Kirtley also remembered Eyre’s enthusiasm at the time for performing, wherever and whatever the audience. “We had just been to another fruitless meeting with a record company and headed straight for the pub, mostly full of city business types. There was a piano in the corner. Tommy headed straight for it, playing whatever came into his head. One of these suits came over to enquire if this scruff could play any Chopin. Tommy promptly asked him which particular piece and then rattled it off, followed by several others. The gent stood flabbergasted. Tommy had a vast catalogue of music stored in his ever curious mind.” Riff Raff ultimately disbanded and by the end of 1974.

Cris Williamson is an American feminist singer-songwriter and political activist, born in 1947 in Deadwood, South Dakota, although her family moved to Colorado and Wyoming when she was still young. Her musical idol at the time was Judy Collins, and Williamson developed a musical style and sound that was similar to that of Collins. She released her first album, The Artistry of Cris Williamson in 1964, when she was sixteen. She became a local musical sensation in Sheridan, Wyoming, releasing two following LPs afterward. Instruments: piano, guitar Years active:1964 - present She achieved fame as a recording artist, and who was a pioneer as a visible lesbian political activist, during a time when few who were not connected to the Lesbian community were aware of Gay and Lesbian issues. Williamson's music and insight has served as a catalyst for change in the creation of women-owned record companies in the 1970s. Using her musical talents, networking with other lesbian artists of musical quality, and her willingness to represent those who did not yet feel safe in speaking for themselves, Williamson is remembered by many in the LGBT community for her contributions, both artistically, and politically, and continues to be a role model for a younger generation hoping to address concerns and obtain recognition for achievements specific to people who have historically been ignored. Williamson recorded two albums with her long-time producer and lover, Tret Fure. Williamson and Fure ended their 20-year relationship in 2000, and each now records as a solo artist. Cris has worked as a session musician both to support herself and to lend assistance to other fellow artists. She has collaborated with other women's music artists, including Meg Christian and Teresa Trull. She has friends in many corners; one longtime friend is musician Bonnie Raitt, who has played on some of her albums.
Williamson has been a lesbian feminist and a promoter of women owned music companies. She has recently become involved in a new project with Bonnie Raitt. Cris Williamson - The Changer and the Changed (Full Album, 1975) :

Biography: Madden And Harris is a folk duo from Sydney Australia, Madden And Harris had the particularity of being a teacher/pupil team, Peter Harris being a classically trained music teacher who was a multi-instrumentalist (from keyboards to winds, harp and guitars), while Dave Madden was a guitar student of the former. The duo started playing together as early as 72, releasing a single in 74 (Remember Me and its flipside, A Simple Song, both track a pure UK/Celtic-like folk drenched in mellotron), before releasing their only album in 75, Fools Paradise. This album was released on their own private label, Jasmine Records, and only 500 copies were pressed. It was a suopebly illustrated gatefold album with an extremely fascinating innerfold, drawn by Jane Lerossognol and named Fool's Paradise. The album's sidelong suite is dedicated to this painting, and the arrangements are fully progressive some movements are drowned in mellotron drones. Harris once said of Fool's Paradise: "our music lies halfway between a 16th century chamber sound with light jazzy influenced breaks", but there is a pure 60/70's folk-rock vein to be found in their music as well. The album sank without a trace and nothing is known of the two author's post M&H days in music. Apparently the album saw a reissue in the very early 90's, but we had to wait for the Korean label M2U to release this album in its full-blown splendour, a mini-Lp with the non-album single tracks added as sweet bonuses.
Forest were an English psychedelic-folk / acid-folk trio who formed in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, in 1966. Made up of brothers Martin Welham, Adrian Welham and school friend Dez Allenby, they started out performing unaccompanied traditional folk music in a similar vein to contemporaries The Watersons and The Young Tradition. The band were pioneers of the nascent 1960s underground acoustic-psychedelic/acid-folk scene writing unconventionally crafted songs evoking Britain's ancient groves using a variety of acoustic instruments. Years active: 1966 - 1972 Beginning life under the name The Foresters of Walesby, the group began singing unaccompanied vocal harmony folk songs in Lincolnshire folk clubs. After relocating to Birmingham, West Midlands, in 1968, they shortened their name to Forest and soon progressed to writing within the burgeoning psychedelic/acid folk movement in the wake of the Incredible String Band's emergence in the mid-1960s. The non-album single "Searching for Shadows" was released in 1969, followed by Forest's debut eponymous album which featured an array of acoustic medieval sounding instruments, contrapunctal harmonies and pastoral lyrical imagery.
Full Circle was released a year later, an eclectic set of songs with dark themes that saw more disparate styles incorporated into their brand of pagan folk, including the neo-classical piece 'Graveyard' and the bleakly baroque "Midnight Hanging of a Runaway Serf". Opening track "Hawk The Hawker" was given a country hint by the inclusion of steel guitar (played by session musician Gordon Huntley) and the traditional folk piece 'Famine Song' saw the band return to their unaccompanied three-part harmony roots. Both gatefold album covers featured strikingly haunting artwork by artist Joan Melville.
Dez Allenby left the band in 1971 and the Welhams drafted in Dave Panton (viola, oboe and saxophone) and Dave Stubbs (bass) for their live work. Forest's final festival appearance was at the 1971 Pinkpop Festival in Geleen, Netherlands, which saw them record their final BBC Radio 1 sessions before disbanding later that year.
Forest's second album, Full Circle, was one of The Guardian's 1000 albums to hear before you die. Martin Welham is now one half of psych-folk duo, The Story, with his son Tom. Dez Allenby is active playing music in East Yorkshire and beyond. Spring was a Leicester-based British progressive rock band that represented the early 1970s progressive rock movement. A one-shot band, it recorded only one album in its career, a self-titled LP released in 1971. Spring's music is notable for the use of the mellotron, with three of the its five members credited with playing that instrument on the album. A turning point in Spring's fortunes happened after a gig in Cardiff, when the band's van broke down somewhere in the Welsh countryside, coincidentally very near where producer/engineer Kingsley Ward had recently set up Rockfield Studios. Ward would later marvel at the "coincidence of meeting a group with a broken down truck in your own home town when you have previously spent months traipsing around the country in search of talent". He was particularly intrigued by the fact that they owned a Mellotron, and "invited them down the following week for an audition with my brother Charles and myself", the outcome of which was "good enough for us to want to be involved with them". Several demo sessions followed. The band were rehearsing at Rockfield when producer Gus Dudgeon (of David Bowie and Elton John fame) dropped by to check the studio out, heard them play and expressed interest in producing them. A few months later, sessions took place at both Rockfield and London's Trident Studios, and the resulting album was released on the RCA/Neon label in 1971.
In spite of supporting Velvet Underground on a UK tour, plus Keith Christmas and The Sutherland Brothers on various dates, the band broke up in 1972 following aborted attempts at recording a second album. Two previously unreleased songs from these sessions (featuring new bassist Peter Decindis) appeared on The Laser's Edge's 1992 CD reissue of the album, along with "Fool's Gold" from the first album sessions. Moran later worked as sound engineer at Rockfield Studios, notably for Van der Graaf Generator and Robert Plant; he died in early 2011. Martinez became an in-demand session guitarist, working with the likes of Alkatraz, Michael Chapman, Gypsy, Tim Rose and Robert Plant. Pick Withers later became the drummer for Dire Straits, playing on their first four records. Kips Brown became a session musician, playing with Andy Fairweather Low and others, and was in a later band called 'Wellington'. Adrian Moloney returned to the Midlands, where he worked alongside several well-known artistes and groups. A solo career as a jobbing musician and minor impresario, took him all over the Midlands and also to Tenerife for several summer seasons. He was working right up to his premature death in 2010.
