Alix Dobkin (Folk / USA)

Kay Gardner, Pat Moschetta, and Alix Dobkin at a recording session in 1973

Alix Dobkin (born August 16, 1940) is an American folk singer-songwriter.

Instruments: vocals, guitar

Years active: 1973 - present

Like everyone else's story, mine begins before I was born, which is what My Red Blood is about. The memoir describes the beginnings of my career in the late 1950s, when Philadelphia was a hotbed of do-it-yourself culture that magnetized folk music on the East Coast. I was a teenaged, guitar-totin', card-carrying comrade grounding myself in mushrooming crowds of progressive Jews, self-taught musicians and other local subversives.

Immediately after graduating from the Tyler School of Fine Arts I headed east to NYC's world-famous Gaslight Cafe, and from that rich, heady, heart of Greenwich Village in the early '60's, I launched my full-time, professional folksinging career.

Focusing during the first decade on a traditional, international, and contemporary/protest repertory, I then came out as a Lesbian in 1972 and turned to writing and singing for women in general and to building Lesbian culture in particular."

In 1973, with Kay Gardner and Marilyn Ries, I produced "Lavender Jane Loves Women", the very first album by, for and about Lesbians in the history of the world. From then until now, I have focused on the lives, concerns and perspectives of women who love women.

Over the last 25 years I have traveled to hundreds of women's communities in this country and many others. It has been my privilege and pleasure to gather elements of our common culture and to create a body of stories, songs, observations, and opinions, to share with you. They honor and reflect our unique feminist style, substance, issues and values. In addition to seven recordings, I have one songbook, many years worth of columns and articles, a shelf full of awards to my name; and was voted "All Time Favorite Performer" by Hot Wire magazine, and have been known to some as "Head Lesbian!" Spin magazine called me a "womyn's music legend" and the FBI reported that I was a "trouble maker."

Most commonly defined as "music by, for, & about women," the category of Women's Music has been entertaining and enlightening a vast network of Lesbians, our friends and supporters at concerts, festivals, conferences, gatherings and parties, on vinyl, tape, disc, and songbook since the early 1970s.

"My career in women’s music sprang from the soil of J. S. Bach, The Red Army Chorus, Louis Armstrong, and Broadway shows, topped off by the folk music scene of the 1960s, and has granted me a life rich, challenging, and satisfying beyond my wildest dreams." (from the Epilogue of My Red Blood)

Text: Alix Dobkin

Wiki:

In 1965 she married Sam Hood who ran the Gaslight Cafe. They moved to Miami and opened The Gaslight South Cafe, but moved back to New York in 1968. Their daughter Adrian was born two years later, and the following year the marriage broke up. A few months later, Dobkin came out as a lesbian, which was uncommon for a public personality to do at the time.

She has since released a number of albums as well as a songbook and has toured throughout the US, Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand promoting lesbian culture and community through womyn's music. Dobkin has been a highly vocal opponent of women-only space through her consistent exclusion of males. In one letter to the National Center for Lesbian Rights, she explained, "For over twenty years men have declared themselves 'women,' manipulated their bodies and then demanded the feminist seal of approval from survivors of girlhood.... [My lyrics] are not 'oppressive' but refer to those of us who have a girlhood & a clitoris, & no one else." Her controversial criticisms of postmodernism, sadomasochism, transgenderism and other issues, including her piece "The Emperor's New Gender", have appeared in several of her written columns, "Minstrel Blood."

SONG OF THE DAY / Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers - It's Good To Be King

Today it's the birthday of our king (the Netherlands). So the Song of the day will have the word King in the title.

Happy birthday Alexander!

Tom Petty - It's Good To Be King : https://youtu.be/6aogOR8c8Q4 :

Lyrics:

"It's Good To Be King"

It's good to be king, if just for a while
To be there in velvet, yeah, to give 'em a smile
It's good to get high and never come down
It's good to be king of your own little town

Yeah, the world would swing if I were king
Can I help it if I still dream time to time

It's good to be king and have your own way
Get a feeling of peace at the end of the day
And when your bulldog barks and your canary sings
You're out there with winners, it's good to be king

Yeah I'll be king when dogs get wings
Can I help it if I still dream time to time

It's good to be king and have your own world
It helps to make friends, it's good to meet girls
A sweet little queen who can't run away
It's good to be king, whatever it pays

Excuse me if I have some place in my mind

Where I go time to time

Cirkus (prog. rock / UK)

Formed from the ashes of bands Moonhead and Lucas Tyson, the group's high standard of musicianship was well known in their native north-east where they attracted much attention and had a devoted following. It was felt that the quintet could achieve success on a national scale, provided management handled matters properly and they got the right breaks. In 1973 they recorded their debut album "Cirkus One" at Sound Associates/Emison & Air Studios and just 1000 copies were pressed up. It is widely regarded by many collectors today as the most musically accomplished private pressing of its kind to emerge out of the UK's then burgeoning progressive music scene, influenced by King Crimson and Yes.

When in 1975 lead vocalist Paul Robson left the group, his replacement was Alan Roadhouse (ex Halfbreed) who also played the saxophone. With Dogg on acoustic and electric guitars, Derek Miller on keyboards, John Taylor on bass and main songwriter Stu McDade providing backing vocals, drums and assorted persussions, this became the new line-up. As a result the band moved away from their early symphonic style adopting a somewhat more mainstream approach albeit maintaining a certain "Cirkus sound".

In 1977 CIRKUS made an unusual move by touring in a somewhat zany theatre production called "Future Shock". Based on the musical, an LP of the same name was released, although none of the band members wrote any of the material. The LP was issued by Shock Records and is now very rare. The music is of a whimsical and offbeat nature, a far cry from the outfit's prog-rock roots and therefore of limited appeal. A year later a CIRKUS track called "I'm On Fire" was featured on a "Battle Of The Bands" LP but this proved to be their final offering before the five went their separate ways in the early '80s.

In 1994 was released "Cirkus II The Global Cut", where only Derek Miller features from the original line-up. In 1998 the much anticipated and quite magnificent third CIRKUS album "Pantomyne" was finally unveiled. This splendid offering brought original members, and main songwriter, Stu McDade back into the fold and featured cameo performances by an array of other musicians most notably former frontman Alan Roadhouse, who played flute. Anyway "Cirkus One" remains an exquisite album of outstanding creativity much deserving its high standing in the kingdom of progressive rock.

CCC Inc. - Hippies in de Peel (documentaire / Nederland) (documentary / The Netherlands)

Biografie:

===================================================================

Biography:

In 1967 CCC Inc. was founded in Amsterdam. The name CCC is an abbreviation of Capital Canal City. The band plays mainly American traditional folk and blues-music.
Around 1969 CCC gets its best-known cast: Joost Belinfante, fiddle, harmonica, vocals; Jaap van Beusekom, banjo, autoharp, vocals; Ernst Jansz, washboard, piano; Jan Kloos, guitar; Appie Rammers, bass and Huib Schreurs, harmonica.

In 1970 the band is enjoying a high profile by starting a commune on the Brabant countryside and by being announced as one of the few Dutch groups to act on the main stage of the legendary pop festival of Kralingen. CCC as well is extremely successful in the club circuit and becomes the resident orchestra of Paradiso, Melkweg and Fantasio (the Kosmos).
Having released  four albums, the group puts a stop to its activities in 1974 and goes underground.
During annual meetings still music is created and at times CCC gives occasional concerts. Recordings of these sessions can be heard on the 12-CD box with the collected work, that is released to mark the 40th anniversary in 2007. CCC decides to perform a limited number of concerts every year.

Hawkwind ( space rock, hard rock, heavy metal, prog. rock, psych. rock / England)

Biography:

Hawkwind are an English rock band and one of the earliest space rock groups. Their lyrics favour urban and science fiction themes. Formed in November 1969, Hawkwind have gone through many incarnations and they have incorporated different styles into their music, including hard rock, heavy metal, progressive rock and psychedelic rock. They are also regarded as an influential proto-punk band.

Dozens of musicians, dancers and writers have worked with the band since their inception. Notable musicians to have performed in the band include Lemmy, Ginger Baker and Huw Lloyd-Langton, but the band are most closely associated with their founder, the singer, songwriter and guitarist Dave Brock, who remains the only original member.

They are best known for the song "Silver Machine".

Also known as: Hawkwind Zoo, Sonic Assassins, Hawklords, Psychedelic Warriors, Agents of Chaos, Group X, Hawkwind Light Orchestra, The Elves of Silbury Hill.

Years active: 1969 – present

1969: Formation:

Dave Brock and Mick Slattery had been in the London-based psychedelic band Famous Cure, and a meeting with bassist John Harrison revealed a mutual interest in electronic music which led the trio to embark upon a new musical venture together. Seventeen-year-old drummer Terry Ollis replied to an advert in a music weekly, while Nik Turner and Michael 'Dik Mik' Davies, old acquaintances of Brock, offered help with transport and gear, but were soon pulled into the band.

Gatecrashing a local talent night at the All Saints Hall, Notting Hill, they were so untogether as to not even have a name, plumping for "Group X" at the last minute, nor any songs, choosing to play an extended 20-minute jam on The Byrds "Eight Miles High". BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel was in the audience and was impressed enough to tell event organiser, Douglas Smith, to keep an eye on them. Smith signed them up and got them a deal with Liberty Records on the back of a deal he was setting up for Cochise.

The band settled on the name Hawkwind after briefly being billed as Hawkwind Zoo, Hawkwind being the nickname of Turner derived from his unappealing habit of clearing his throat (hawking) and excessive flatulence (wind). Another version of the origin of their name says they took it from one of Michael Moorcock's characters Duke Dorian Hawkmoon one of the aspects of Moorcock's Eternal Champion. However Moorcock denies this account. An Abbey Road session took place recording demos of "Hurry on Sundown" and others (included on the remasters version of Hawkwind), after which Slattery left to be replaced by Huw Lloyd-Langton, who had known Brock from his days working in a music shop selling guitar strings to Brock, then a busker.

Classic Albums (The making of) / John Lennon - Imagine (1971)

John Lennon - Imagine (1971) :

The Making of: https://youtu.be/7GP5mX5Ty8U :

Imagine is the second studio album by John Lennon. Recorded and released in 1971, the album is more heavily produced in contrast to the basic, raw arrangements of his previous album, the critically acclaimed John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band. The album is considered the most popular of his works and the title track is considered one of Lennon's finest songs.
Music and lyrics:

Imagine was written and recorded during a period of particularly bad feeling between Lennon and former bandmate Paul McCartney, following The Beatles' break-up the year before and McCartney winning his case in the High Court to have their legal partnership dissolved. Harrison guested on half of Imagine 's ten tracks, including the brutal "How Do You Sleep?" - a song written in retaliation against McCartney's alleged personal attacks on Lennon and Ono, on his recent Ram album. Although Lennon softened his stance in the mid '70s and claimed he wrote "How Do You Sleep?" about himself, he revealed in 1980: "I used my resentment against Paul ... to create a song ... not a terrible vicious horrible vendetta ... I used my resentment and withdrawing from Paul and The Beatles, and the relationship with Paul, to write 'How Do You Sleep?'. I don't really go 'round with those thoughts in my head all the time ..."

The track "Imagine" became Lennon's signature song and was written as a plea for world peace. Years later he gave credit to his wife Yoko Ono who co-wrote the song. "Jealous Guy" has also had enduring popularity; it was originally composed as "Child of Nature" during the songwriting sessions in India in 1968 that led to The Beatles' double album The Beatles. "Oh My Love" and the song "How?" were influenced by his experience with primal therapy: "How?" contains the questions he was facing while going through the changes produced in him during the ongoing process of primal therapy, while "Oh My Love" was written to communicate the joy and growth Lennon was experiencing as a result of the therapy.

Lennon also indulged his love of rock and roll with "Crippled Inside" and "It's So Hard". "Gimme Some Truth", originally heard during the Let It Be sessions in early 1969, appears on the album with a new bridge. The politically themed "I Don't Want to Be a Soldier" closes the first half of Imagine in a cacophonous manner. The last song on the album was "Oh Yoko!"; EMI pushed for this track to be the single, but Lennon thought it was too "pop".

An Emerald City (psychedelic, post rock, instrumental / New Zealand)

Forming in late 2005 this New Zealand six piece band has created a sound that combines Eastern traditional instruments and psychedelic leanings with experimentation and musical liberation. Instrumental, thoughtful songs created by guitars, drums, sitars, violins, a Persian long necked lute, tabla, daabuka, piano and percussion found from various reaches of the universe.

Their debut self titled EP was released in 2008 and co-produced by Liam Finn. It was critically acclaimed and the band continued to play memorable live performances at the likes of Womad, Soundsplash, Rhythm and Vines and Canaan Downs.

2009 saw the release of their debut album Circa Scaria which was recorded in the cave of Whatipu on Auckland’s west coast. Soon after release the band relocated to Berlin where they have lived as a base to tour Europe.

In late 2010 the band, stripped back to four members, returned to record. In Studio East, a quaint recording studio located in the heart of communist era Germany’s Funkhaus, the old broadcasting building on the banks of the river Spree. The imposing soviet style building and the snow outside helped to create the eerie prog offering that was An Emerald City’s second record The Fourth, released in April 2011.

An Emerald City have gathered an excellent following in their home country and have spent much of late 2007 and 2008 playing shows, festivals and tours supporting the release of their debut self titled EP, which has received excellent reviews. Late 2008 and early 2009 has seen the band back on the festival circuit with legendary live shows throughout the South Island of New Zealand. The band have gone into record their debut album in early January 2009 in an isolated cave on the rugged West Coast of Auckland.

Their first three songs from their EP went on to high rotate on New Zealand alternative radio, and all were Top 40 New Zealand radio singles, despite commercial radio not being involved at all. Their first song Qing Song spent 12 weeks in New Zealand’s premier alternative radio stations top ten with four weeks at number 1.

Having been one of the stand out local acts at Womad 2008, Big Day Out 2009 , Soundsplash, Canaan Downs and Rhythm and Vines, they are gaining a reputation as one of the country’s most exciting and refreshing live acts. The band relocate to Europe (Berlin) in May 2009.

The band returned home to NZ for the summer of 2012 for a select few shows, and, now, it is announced their final one before parting company.

Rare Earth - Get Ready from the album "Get Ready" (1969)

Long version : https://youtu.be/q-Rg9xwZoo8 :

The album version of "Get Ready" was often played in full at college gatherings. It was a precursor to the 12-inch dance singles. The edited version would eventually become a pop hit. It is of interest to music historians[who?] as the source of the riff to the Rolling Stones' track "Bitch" which appeared on their 1971 album Sticky Fingers.

Rick Wakeman - Return to the Centre of the Earth (1999)

Return to the Centre of the Earth is a 1999 concept album by Rick Wakeman. This work is a sequel to Journey to the Centre of the Earth, an earlier album by Wakeman released in 1974.

The album is narrated by Patrick Stewart and features vocals by Justin Hayward, Katrina Leskanich, Tony Mitchell, Ozzy Osbourne, Trevor Rabin and Bonnie Tyler.

The album was performed live in its entirety only twice. Both performances occurred in the Canadian province of Québec.

The world premiere performance of the album was in Trois-Rivières, Quebec on June 30, 2001. Performing with Wakeman were The English Rock Ensemble, his son Adam on keyboards, guitarist Ant Glynne, bass player Lee Pomeroy, and drummer Tony Fernandez. Vocals were performed by Luck Mervil and Fabiola Toupin in a rare English-language performance for the two Francophone artists.

The album was performed in its entirety again on July 15, 2006 on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City. Wakeman was accompanied by an all-star 45-piece symphonic orchestra conducted by Gilles Bellemare, the Vocalys Ensemble (a 20 person choir), the English Rock Ensemble, various vocal guests including Jon Anderson, Annie Villeneuve and Vincent Marois and a narration from Guy Nadon. All this was augmented by a large set of giant screens, fireworks and lights. Wakeman has stated that this show was the highlight of his career.
